Chairman, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, Alhaji Bello Sulaiman, said the council has trained 1,054 women in various skills to empower them to be self-reliant.
Sulaiman told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe, on Thursday, that the women were selected from various wards in the area.
He said women were trained on various skills, such as weaving of bags with beads, soap making, poultry farming, tailoring, fish farming, among others.
He explained that the training lasted for three to four months, depending on the trade.
Sulaiman said the local government collaborated with JAIZ Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), to give the trainees interest-free loans to enable them start their businesses.
He said very soon, another set of trainees would be enrolled as part of efforts at ensuring that the programme accommodated more women and youths.
Sulaiman said the next programme would train youths on the making of Plaster of Paris, inter-locking stones, repair of solar powered pumps and others, to serve their immediate communities.
The chairman said the council planned to train 3,000 to 4,000 women and youths before the end of his two years tenure.
